Best Time to Visit Minneriya

The dry season, generally from June to September, is the classic period for The Gathering because elephants move towards the tank as smaller water sources dry. The exact timing varies with rainfall, and nearby Kaudulla or Hurulu Eco Park may have better sightings in some months.

Wildlife is present throughout the year, but afternoon temperatures can be high. Travel with water, sun protection, and realistic expectations: animals remain wild and sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Tips for a Minneriya Safari

• Choose a licensed jeep and an experienced, wildlife-conscious driver.
• Keep voices low and never ask the driver to approach or block an animal.
• Bring binoculars, sunscreen, a hat, water, and a light long-sleeved layer.
• Remain seated inside the jeep unless the guide confirms it is safe to stop.

Getting to Minneriya

Minneriya is close to Habarana and Polonnaruwa in Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle. The park is around five hours from Colombo by road, and it is commonly visited from Sigiriya, Dambulla, or Kandy as part of a private tour.
