- Respect mangrove habitats and never leave plastic on the beach or in the lagoon.
- Book Ayurveda treatments with established centres that provide a qualified consultation.
Bentota is a relaxed coastal resort town where Sri Lanka's golden beach meets the calm waters of the Bentota River and lagoon. It is a convenient first or final stop for travellers arriving from Colombo and a comfortable base for a west-coast holiday.
The long beach invites slow days in the sun, while the lagoon brings a different kind of adventure with boat rides, mangrove scenery, and water sports. Bentota is also known for Ayurveda, seafood, and easy access to Galle and nearby river communities.
Things to Do in Bentota
Spend a morning on Bentota Beach, take a boat safari through the mangroves, or try jet skiing, windsurfing, kayaking, and banana-boat rides with a reputable operator. The lagoon is generally calmer than the open sea and suits a range of activities.
Visit a turtle conservation centre, explore the nearby Brief Garden, or travel south to Galle Fort. A sunset river cruise is a gentle way to see kingfishers, monitor lizards, and the changing light over the waterways.
Best Time to Visit Bentota
The west and south-west coast is usually at its best from November to April, with sunnier weather and calmer sea conditions. The southwest monsoon from May to September can bring rain and rougher surf, although the lagoon and resort life remain active.
Tips for Visiting Bentota
Getting to Bentota
Bentota is around 80 kilometres south of Colombo. The Southern Expressway makes the drive quick by private car, while trains and buses stop at nearby Bentota or Aluthgama. A private transfer is useful when carrying luggage or continuing to Galle, Mirissa, or Yala.
How long should I stay?
Two or three nights suit a beach and lagoon break. Add more time for a slow wellness stay, multiple water activities, or day trips along the coast.
What to keep in mind
Bentota's beach, lagoon, and river are shared natural spaces. Choose responsible boat and water-sports providers, avoid disturbing wildlife, and follow local advice when weather conditions change.

A Softer Side of the Sri Lankan Coast
Where River and Sea Meet
Bentota's character comes from the contrast between its broad ocean beach and its sheltered inland waterways. The change of scenery takes only a few minutes, yet it opens up two very different ways to experience the coast.
It is an easy destination to include in a longer Sri Lanka journey, with enough activities for adventurous travellers and enough quiet corners for anyone who simply wants the sea, a good meal, and an unhurried afternoon.
