Visa Requirements and Entry Rules for Sri Lanka

Most foreign visitors to Sri Lanka need to arrange entry authorization before travel, and understanding the process in advance avoids delays at the airport.

The Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA)

The majority of nationalities require an ETA, which is applied for online ahead of the trip and is generally used for tourism visits of up to 30 days, with the option to extend locally through the Department of Immigration. Requirements and eligible nationalities can change, so it's important to check the official government channel closest to your travel date rather than relying on older information.

Passport and Documentation

A passport valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date is typically required, along with proof of onward travel and, in some cases, evidence of sufficient funds for your stay.

Arrival Procedures

On arrival, having your ETA confirmation, passport and return ticket details ready speeds up the immigration process. Keep a digital and printed copy of your ETA approval in case of connectivity issues.

Before You Book

Apply for your ETA only through the official government website to avoid third-party sites charging extra fees, and apply with enough lead time in case additional verification is requested.
