- Health & Safety
Sri Lanka is generally a safe and welcoming destination, and a small amount of preparation around health and insurance helps you travel with peace of mind.
Vaccinations and Health Precautions
Requirements vary by traveler and itinerary, so checking with a travel health clinic or your doctor well before departure is the best approach, particularly for routine immunizations and any recommended for the region. Mosquito-borne illnesses exist in tropical climates generally, so repellent and covering up in the evenings is sensible practice, especially outside coastal resort areas.
Drinking Water and Food Safety
Bottled or filtered water is the safer choice over tap water, and most hotels and restaurants catering to visitors are used to this expectation. Freshly cooked food from busy local eateries is usually a good sign of turnover and freshness.
General Safety
Petty theft is uncommon but not unheard of, so standard precautions apply: use hotel safes, keep an eye on belongings in crowded places, and agree on transport fares in advance. Road safety is worth particular attention, since traffic patterns differ from many visitors' home countries.
Travel Insurance
Comprehensive travel insurance covering medical treatment, evacuation, and trip cancellation is strongly recommended, since it protects against costs from anything unexpected, whether that's a minor injury on a hike or a missed connection.
