After a great breakfast in the hotel, travel to Polonnaruwa via Habarana by public bus and your private vehicle. Polonnaruwa was the capital of the Indian Chola Dynasty after Anuradhapura was conquered in the late 10th century. These ruins are in better condition compared to the ones you have just seen. Exploring the ancient city of Polonnaruwa on a bicycle is still the best way to navigate through its more than 1000-year-old remains. After the heat subsides, you will have the opportunity to visit additional palaces, temples, and stupas.
One of the highlights will be the impressive stone Buddhas, towering 14 meters high and carved out of granite, depicting the reclining Buddha. These sculptures are considered the pinnacle of Sinhalese rock carving. Another notable site is the grand palace of a king, boasting seven floors and constructed with burned bricks and timber. After enjoying a relaxing time on the beach in Mirissa, we continued our journey and made a stop to witness the fascinating sight of fishermen on sticks. Our next destination was Galle, where we had the chance to explore the renowned Galle Fortress, also known as the Dutch Fort. Moving on from Galle, we boarded a train to Colombo, the capital of the nation. During a bus tour of the city, we made sure to visit some of its prominent landmarks such as Independence Square, Parliament, and the National Museum. Our tour concluded with a visit to the Barefoot Fairtrade Store, where we had the opportunity to support small cottage industries by purchasing handicrafts from various regions of the country. If you happen to be in Colombo on a Saturday, don’t miss the chance to visit the Good Market, a local market that showcases social enterprises and responsible businesses through its diverse range of stalls.
