Handling money smoothly in Sri Lanka is straightforward once you know the basics of the local currency, where to withdraw cash, and how tipping typically works.

The Sri Lankan Rupee

The Sri Lankan rupee (LKR) is the official currency, and while some larger hotels and tour operators quote prices in US dollars, day-to-day spending is done in rupees. Carrying small notes is useful for tuk-tuks, markets and tipping.

ATMs and Cards

ATMs are widely available in cities, towns and tourist areas, and most accept international cards, though a foreign transaction fee usually applies. Cards are accepted at hotels, larger restaurants and shops, but smaller guesthouses, local eateries and tuk-tuks generally expect cash.

Exchanging Money

Banks and licensed money changers at the airport and in major towns offer reasonable rates; it's worth comparing a couple of options rather than exchanging a large sum at the first counter you see.

Tipping Norms

Tipping is customary but not always mandatory. Drivers and guides are typically tipped per day of service, hotel porters and housekeeping a small amount per service, and restaurants a modest percentage where a service charge isn't already included on the bill.
