Top Cultural Triangle Sites You Shouldn't Miss

The Cultural Triangle holds most of Sri Lanka's ancient capitals and religious monuments, and it is where the island's long history feels most tangible.

Sigiriya

The rock fortress of Sigiriya rises dramatically from the plains, topped with the remains of a royal palace and famous frescoes partway up the climb. It is best visited early in the morning, both to avoid the heat and the crowds.

Anuradhapura

Sri Lanka's first ancient capital spreads across a wide, park-like site of dagobas, monastery ruins and the sacred Sri Maha Bodhi tree. A bicycle is a pleasant way to cover the distances between monuments.

Polonnaruwa

More compact than Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa's ruins include the Gal Vihara rock-cut Buddha statues and the remains of the royal palace complex, making it easier to see in a half-day visit.

Kandy

Kandy, the last royal capital, is home to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and a lake-side setting that feels calmer than the coastal cities. It also works well as a base for hill country trips.

Planning Your Route

Basing yourself centrally, such as near Sigiriya or Habarana, allows day trips to all four sites without repeatedly packing and unpacking. Two to three nights is usually enough to see the highlights without rushing.
